The fear of losing some of the most bio-diverse spaces on Earth has put in the spotlight the need <strong>to conserve<\/strong> them and, for this, it is necessary to protect their biodiversity, which human beings also depend on. One way to preserve this wildlife treasure is to enhance it like the <strong>UNESCO<\/strong> organization with the <strong>World Heritage List<\/strong>. This list includes <strong>252 sites known for their natural value<\/strong>, covering nearly 0.8% of the Earth\u2019s surface.<br>However, we must keep in mind that there are <strong>areas <\/strong>with <strong>exceptional biodiverse values <\/strong>that are not on the World Heritage List; that is to say, there are <strong>imbalances between this list and the distribution of the planet&#8217;s biodiversity.<\/strong> With this idea, in 1997, researcher Russel Mittermeier developed the concept of <strong>megadiverse countries<\/strong> <strong>and<\/strong> determined that <strong>the 17 most diverse countries in the world occupy less than 10% of the planet&#8217;s surface and are home to 70% of the recognized species.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8371 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/palmarvoyages.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Megadiverse_Countries.png\" alt=\"Megadiverse Country\" width=\"800\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/palmarvoyages.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Megadiverse_Countries.png 800w, https:\/\/palmarvoyages.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Megadiverse_Countries-300x132.png 300w, https:\/\/palmarvoyages.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Megadiverse_Countries-768x339.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4509\" src=\"https:\/\/palmarvoyages.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/WhatsApp-Image-2020-03-25-at-15.23.22-2-300x199.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\"> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>WHAT DOES A COUNTRY NEED TO BE MEGADIVERSE ? <\/strong><br>The main criterion is<strong> endemism<\/strong> and countries must have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At least 5,000 endemic plant species<\/li>\n<li>Marine ecosystems within its borders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4510 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/palmarvoyages.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Galapagos-24-junio-1-julio-2007-010-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 17 megadiverse countries are assessed globally based on the number and level of endemic species present and, although there are no boundaries in nature, this classification can be used to raise awareness and protect the biodiversity, especially in the country where it is most abundant and, in many <strong>cases <\/strong>brittle. Whether recognized by UNESCO or not, these countries cherish <strong>an exceptional biodiversity that deserves to be preserved.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4511 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/palmarvoyages.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/WhatsApp-Image-2020-03-25-at-15.23.22-300x168.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\"><br><u>In 5th place:<strong> ECUADOR<\/strong><\/u><\/h3>\n<p>Bordering between Colombia and Peru, Ecuador is the<strong> smallest country <\/strong>on the list and, surrounded by megadiverse countries, can boast of being a small natural treasure. <strong>The Galapagos Islands<\/strong> have a lot to do with this, as they are distinguished by the wide variety of endemic species they possess.
