Ecuador: a paradise for birds<\/h1>

This small Latin American country has a unique and very rich fauna and flora. Ecuador has 1671 different species of birds<\/a>. This is twice as many as North America and 3 times as many as Europe.<\/a> Let\u2019s discover together the emblematic birds of this country.<\/b><\/span><\/h2>

\"birdsThe Cock of the Rock<\/span><\/b> of the Cloud Forest<\/b><\/span><\/h3>

The Cock of the Rock<\/strong> is a bird that can be observed in Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru and of course Ecuador. It measures about 30 cm<\/strong> and lives mainly in the humid and dense woods<\/strong> of the Amazon<\/strong>. That is why the Mindo Cloud Forest<\/strong> is an ideal habitat for them. Males and females can be clearly distinguished: the malehas a red-orange colour and a straight ridge on his beak, along with black wings and tail. The female is reddish-brown and has a smaller crest.<\/span><\/p>

E<\/b>cuador, land of hummingbirds<\/b><\/span><\/h3>

As a matter of fact, this country is the home of a wide diversity<\/strong> of small birds<\/strong> that are hummingbirds<\/strong>. For example, in 2018 a new species was discovered. It was quite a big deal, as it had not been the case for 30 years! Its name is “Oreotrochilus cyanolaemus” and measures only 11 centimetres<\/strong>. It can be recognized by its intense blue plumage at its throat, its white breast marked with two black stripes and its emerald green head.<\/span><\/p>

A wide variety of hummingbirds<\/strong> can be observed in the Mindo<\/strong> region, two hours from Quito. The Vultur gryphus or Andean Condor<\/strong> is very impressive because of its size: it can measure up to 3 meters<\/strong>!\u00a0 Moreover, it was the largest animal that could be found in Quito, the capital city. That is why the country chose it as a symbol of power<\/strong>. Unfortunately this animal is in danger of extinction<\/strong>. But it can be admired with respect<\/strong> in some reserves and parks of Ecuador.<\/span><\/p>
