The Cock of the Rock of the Cloud ForestThe Cock of the Rock is a bird that can be observed in Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru and of course Ecuador. It measures about 30 cm and lives mainly in the humid and dense woods of the Amazon. That is why the Mindo Cloud Forest is an ideal habitat for them. Males and females can be clearly distinguished: the malehas a red-orange colour and a straight ridge on his beak, along with black wings and tail. The female is reddish-brown and has a smaller crest.
As a matter of fact, this country is the home of a wide diversity of small birds that are hummingbirds. For example, in 2018 a new species was discovered. It was quite a big deal, as it had not been the case for 30 years! Its name is “Oreotrochilus cyanolaemus” and measures only 11 centimetres. It can be recognized by its intense blue plumage at its throat, its white breast marked with two black stripes and its emerald green head.

Did you know that this bird is on the Ecuador flag? The Vultur gryphus or Andean Condor is very impressive because of its size: it can measure up to 3 meters! Moreover, it was the largest animal that could be found in Quito, the capital city. That is why the country chose it as a symbol of power. Unfortunately this animal is in danger of extinction. But it can be admired with respect in some reserves and parks of Ecuador.
